Inspired by Her

To celebrate International Womens Day, I was asked to paint live in Melbourne for a beautiful event inspired by women at Como Melbourne.

I started this piece well before the event in my studio, sketching straight onto canvas. The ideas was to sketch a woman who is confident, self assured and well traveled. (To encapsulate the ‘Inspired by Her’ concept.) For her outfit here I was inspired by the early collections of Christian Dior. Classic and timeless.

I arrived in Melbourne from Brisbane the day before the event. On checking in at Como Melbourne I had time for a quick power nap in my room and a glass of bubbles at the hotel bar before jumping in a taxi to meet a good friend in in the city. We pop into the Hermes at Work event showing at the Melbourne Town Hall, followed by dinner of delicious pasta.

The next day guests arrive for a beautiful morning at Como Melbourne of canapé’s and floral cocktails. With my piece sketched out it’s time to paint! I am about seventy percent sure of what I am going to paint with the piece. But I love to always keep some room to be spontaneous whenever painting live. The spontaneous moments in any painting are always the best! I decide to paint the suit black as a first layer. Once the black paint is dry, it’s adding some highlights to the piece in metallic rose gold paint that comes next. I finish the piece with some soft lip and cheek colour. She looks strong, confident and a little bit mysterious. And with that I know she is complete…
